The Drakensberg mountain range is a paradise for hiker’s and nature lovers with its abundance of unspoilt natural beauty. The combination of dramatic peaks rising up to 3,482 meters, lush valleys and grasslands, stunning waterfalls, refreshing rock pools and mountain streams result in a destination where you can easily spend weeks to exploring this impressive gift from nature.

There are many different approaches to explore the ’Berg. Hikers are spoilt for choice with hundreds of trails criss-crossing the mountainscape, which can also be explored on bicycle trails, horseback and 4x4.While in the area, be sure to pay a visit to some of the ancient San rock paintings!

The San, the original residents of South Africa, are believed to have lived in this area from as early as the Stone Age. They left behind the largest collection of rock paintings in Africa south of the Sahara, with the oldest known paintings dating back more than 3,000 years. Many of these paintings can still be viewed, though visitors are requested to respect these historical sites, which are still used by locals for spiritual ceremonies.

If you are the least bit adventurous, we highly recommend the 4x4 excursion on the iconic Sani Pass which snakes up the mountainside after crossing the Lesotho border. This pass is rightfully considered to be one of the most spectacular mountain roads in the world. Once at the top, enjoy a refreshing beer or soft drink in the highest pub in Africa, and combine this with a cultural visit of a Lesotho traditional homestead.

- Best time to go to The Drakensberg -

Best time to go to The Serengeti

Summer (November -  March):  The best time to visit the Drakensberg is during the summer months (late October to early March). Although summer is the rainy season, it’s warm and pleasant. The mountains are lush and green, and colours can be particularly vibrant, especially after rains. November is the best time to see the wildflowers blooming, which creates colourful spectacles everywhere.

Autumn(March - May) and Spring (September - October): The in-between seasons are lovely and a great time to go to the Drakensberg. Minimum temperatures are in the region of 10°C / 50°F, so you might need a light jacket in the mornings and evening, while max temperatures are around 20°C / 70°F.

Winter(June – August): In winter the mountain can get truly freezing cold (comparable to the Alps), with minimum temperatures around 4°C / 40°F, and snow is common on higher peaks. However, winter is generally a dry period and excellent for hikes of all levels making it a popular time to visit the Drakensberg for active travellers. During these months the mountains appear brown because of the low rainfall, which might not appeal to some.
