Winter (June to September): Moremi’s climate is identical to that of the Okavango Delta, as the two regions are adjacent. Therefore, winter is also the best time to visit Moremi Game Reserve. The days are dry and sunny, water levels are at their highest and this is the best time to explore all of Moremi’s little hidden waterways by boat or mokoro, the traditional dugout canoe. Wildlife is abundant, well-watered, well-fed and healthy.
Spring (September – November) and Autumn ( April – May): Our favourite time to visit Moremi Game Reserve is the in-between seasons of spring and autumn, as they strike a good compromise between good weather and good prices. Many lodges offer reduced mid-season prices for April, May or October, November which can save you up to 40% compared to winter prices. While we will have to choose your lodge more carefully to make sure you can experience your water-based activities fully, it is fully possible to plan a perfectly balanced trip which will introduce you to all facets of a Botswana safari experience. If you are combining your trip with Victoria Falls, you may wish to travel in April or May, as that is when the Falls flow at its strongest.
Summer (December to March): Summer is not the best time to go to the Moremi Game Reserve. Summer is when the majority of rain fall occurs, and the vegetation bounces back to life with lush green trees and high grass as far as the eye can see. While most animals are sedentary and are still present, they will seek shade and will be much harder to spot in the thick summer foliage.
Also, storms and lower water levels can limit activities, and you might not be able to experience boating or mokoro, which is one of the main reasons to visit Botswana for many. However, the silver lining are the much cheaper rates offered during green season. If you chose this season, we recommend you don’t miss out on visiting Makgadikgadi Pans as well, as they experience their best season in summer.
