The island of Mauritius, with its 160km of picture-perfect beaches and azure waters, its lush interiors and sparkling waterfalls, is one of the most popular destinations in the Indian ocean.

Easily accessible by direct flight from Johannesburg, this very affordable destination is malaria free, and a favourite place for honeymooners, families and young adventurers alike to unwind after an unforgettable African safari. With over a hundred beaches and distinct regional differences, this extremely versatile island truly offers something for everyone.

Honeymooners will enjoy the secluded intimate beaches on the east coast, hidden from view by rocky cliffs, and home to some world-class luxury hotels offering romantic intimate getaways. For an added touch of romance, you can even consider boarding a catamaran to explore some of the smaller islands around Mauritius, including Ile aux Cerfs, Ile d’Ambre, Ile au Ronde, or the stunning and secluded island of Ile Aux Aigrettes, declared a Natural Reserve in 1965, and entirely inhabited. The east coast is also perfect for early-risers who will enjoy sunrise over the ocean, while the west coast benefits from gorgeous sunsets behind the surf.

If you prefer a livelier holiday, we recommend your head to the north of Mauritius towards Grand Baie, where you will find unending stretches of white sandy beaches to work on your tan during the day before sampling the bustling nightlife in one of the many restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, is also well worth a visit and offers stunning examples of French colonial architecture and exciting shopping opportunities.

For adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts we recommend exploring the south coast, with its rocky shoreline, wild forests, and towering cliffs. This part of the island is a favourite with hikers, where the trails through the lush forest reveals a waterfall at nearly every turn. Don’t miss out on the spectacular Chamarel Falls, the island’s most spectacular waterfall which plunges 83 metres over a cliff and borders one of the island’s other natural wonders, the seven coloured layers of sand of Chamarel.

Whichever region you chose, you are guaranteed some spectacular diving opportunities, with over 50 spots to choose from on this adventure island. Discover some of the 4,000 species of fish and shellfish indigenous to this island, and for memories to last a lifetime, finish your ocean safari swimming alongside dolphins and whales.

Should you need a break from the beaches and water activities, you can spend some time discovering Mauritius’ fascinating Hindu culture and pay homage to the giant statue of Lord Shiva, the second tallest statue in the world. A visit to a sugar plantation is also a must, where you can sample the taste of unrefined sugars and learn about the vital by-product of the island’s sugar production - rum! Mauritius Rum is indeed a newcomer on the international high end rum scene, with delicious vanilla and spice blends!

Golfers are also well catered for on Mauritius with many award-winning golf courses on offer. After all, this small island was the third country in the world to start playing golf, after the United Kingdom and India. The Mauritius Gymkhana Golf Club is the oldest golf club in the Southern Hemisphere, and the fourth-oldest golf course in the world.

Best time to go to The Serengeti

With its moderate temperatures, gentle trade winds and ample sunshine, Mauritius comes pretty close to being an all year-round destination, however, depending on your unique inclination at The Travel Cafe we will assist you to select the best season to (and special packages on offer).

Winter (May to September):

It never gets cold in Mauritius, with temperatures only dropping from hot to pleasant during winter, averaging around 20° C. The cooler months tend to be dry and sunny, with no air humidity, so if you plan on hiking and being active, this is one of our favourite seasons to visit Mauritius.

As with most African destinations, in our opinion the best time to visit Mauritius is during the season change in May /June as well as October / November, when temperatures are warm, and days are sunny, with temperate temperatures.

Summer (October to April):

Temperatures can easily reach up to 35°C but rarely go beyond that. With the gentle ocean breeze and of course the ocean to go for a refreshing swim, the heat is easily manageable, as is the tropical humidity. While at less risk than Mozambique, January and February can sometimes attract cyclones and at The Travel Cafe we consider these two months our least favourite time to go. If you do travel in January or February, we highly recommend staying on the west coast, which is less impacted by the wind.
