Ethical Animal Encounters

Francois Lebrun • 20 September 2021

Keen on an authentic up-close-and-personal animal encounter, but don't want something that feels like a zoo? An encounter where you know the animals are treated kindly, and with dignity? An animal experience filled with magic, and zero guilt? We know where to go

Fact is, not all animal sanctuaries are equal. At The Travel Cafe Cape Town we take a strong stand for animal encounters where everybody wins - especially the animals. In real terms this means supporting sanctuaries, rehabilitation centres and educational organisations; rather than modern zoos where animals are kept in sad conditions, treated badly and forced to endlessly ''perform'' for guests .

In South Africa there are sanctuaries for all sorts of animals from elephants, rhinos and cheetahs to leopards and lions . There is even one for the cute African penguin (The Travel cafe's mascot). It's called SANCCOB, and it is one of our favourite non-profits.   SANCCOB does amazing work in saving all sorts of seabirds, from penguins to cormorants and albatros. They rescue sick and injured seabirds, deal with oil spills and rehabilitate birds so they can return to nature. Now that is the type of animal encounter that is worthy of support.

If the thought of visiting an ethical conservation and rehabilitation sanctuary appeals to you, send us an email or messenger message. We would love to help you design your dream African adventure.
